Disneyland Railroad (formally Euro Disneyland Railroad)

Posted by eyore, 23 September 2011 · 409 views

The Disneyland Railroad runs around the outer edge of the park as per Walt's instructions for the original concept (he had one on his own property and enjoyed it so much and insisted on one being built in Disneyland and this has continued through other parks).
Formally known as the Euro Disneyland Railroad now forever enshrined in the EDRR logos built into the ironwork of the station and railings. The carriages continued to use the old title until they were eventually repainted.
The journey is considered to start from Main Street station.
As the train passes through each land there is a brief description of where you are followed by audio to compliment the land you are passing through.
Unfortunately, the audio has, in some areas, become out of sync (it appears) - usually playing a little later than it should (sometimes with confusing results. For example, the narrator asks you to look at a ruined temple (the Indiana Jones ride) but, unfortunately, you've already passed it  ).
It may be that the timing of the train has altered since the audio was made or even speed changes during the actual run. It does seem (to me) that the audio is slightly later than it should be in places.

Starting from Main Street Station, the audio (minus narration) runs as follows:
(Confirmed from a live recording taken 3rd August 2011 by eyore).

01 On The Trail - Grand Canyon Suite (should play while passing the Grand Canyon Diorama but has usually finished by the time you reach it leaving only the attraction sfx playing)

02 The Magnificient Seven Theme - The Magnificient Seven/ Mitchy The Kid - City Slickers (OST)

The train reaches Frontierland Station and the audio stops and restarts when the train moves out.

03 The Cavalcade and Maze - Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (track 3 on the BBWWS CD)

04 Anything Goes - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (OST)

05 Short Round's Theme - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (OST)

06 Pirates of the Carribean (Overture) - Pirates of The Carribean ride (as the train passes through the actual ride - trivia - the opening through which you can see the ride contains a skeleton only visible from the train. ;)

07 Mary Poppins Overture - Mary Poppins (OST)

The train then reaches Fantasyland station and the audio stops to be replaced (while in the station) by that of the Toad Hall Restaurant loop which plays from the station speakers.

08 You Can Fly (Instrumental) - from Peter Pan

09 It's A Small World (Instrumental version) - It's A Small World queue.

10a "Paris 2189" - from La Visionarium (attraction closed in 2004)

The train then reaches Discoveryland Station and the music pauses in the middle of the track and resumes as the train moves off.

10b From Time To Time - Main Theme from La Visionarium (see above)

11 Lets Go Fly A Kite (Instrumental) from Mary Poppins then plays as the train approaches Main Street Station..

The train then reaches Main Street Station and the audio loop repeats for the next guests as the train moves off again.

The audio is often subject to being switched off as the guard at the rear of the train calls for guests to remain seated or not to lean out of the carriages and sometimes they forget to switch it back on again.
The speakers for the audio are situated in the roof of each carriage and look like air vents.
Induction is difficult as you need to stand up (and get shouted at to sit down) or you need a telescopic pole to reach it (sorry, not that brave) and the guests are usually very chatty.
We hope to add the English version of the narration here at a later date.

One small correction: The From Time to Time tracks are not the same... The one playing as the train enters Discoveryland is the underscore for the "Paris 2189" scene while the departure track is the main theme.

Also, "Let's go Fly a Kite" is the track for the arrival at Main Street Station, which fits a bit better, perhaps.
Thank you for that info re the visionarium track. Not having had a copy of the source audio, I hadn't realised that it was in sections and had thought it was just one piece of music. Thanks for putting me right. I was able to double check on Youtube (OK, it's Tokyo but, I presume, the same music) as I never filmed it in the park.
That also makes sense for the "let's go fly a kite".
As I said, the audio often seems to be out of sync with the locations so the logic is sometimes missed.
I've made the amendments to the blog.
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us, it's appreciated.
Yes, the unsynchronized audio has a lot to do with the audio system in place, which is relatively unflexible and prone to malfunctions after almost 20 years of wear... There are a few places along the track where the audio is triggered to play a track or two. If the train goes a little faster or a little slower for operational or mechanical considerations, which is pretty much unavoidable, it quickly goes out of sync. Sometimes, the triggers simply don't work or trigger the wrong track. The whole audio system would need to be rethought but with all the major refurbishment work going on right now it might take a while to get around to that.
Thanks for the confirmation. It's usually not that much out of sync (when it's playing of course - I've had quite a few rides in total silence) and the shrubs have grown (especially the bamboo) over the last 20 years. They were quite small back in 92.
They have kept it going well though after 20 years of service. It's still a most enjoyable and relaxing ride.
